I've got two different "beginner" books and they both have different opinions on how to hold the pick. One says that you should rest the wrist on the bridge and touch your pinky finger to the pick guard when playing and the other book says to hold the pick like you would hold it for a guitar, and that doing what the other book says to do can cause "technical issues" and should be avoided.

There are some tunes I just couldn't find tabs for. Ex: Bach's Chaconne, Gavotte en Rondeau, etc. But I could find a MIDI file for them. Yesterday I learned that you can convert MIDI files into tab using tabledit. [File > Import > MIDI > ...] There may be other programs that do this too, I don't know.

My Johnson MA-450 arrived, I picked it up last night. It's a teardrop shaped celtic octave mandolin, and it's got a great sound.

Cool features:
1) Trinity College makers.
2) Really smooth tuning mechanism. And so civilized looking.
3) Big boomy instrument so the sound can bounce.
4) Round hole instead of those puny little F-holes.
5) Loud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
6) single piece bridge connected with small bone saddle (inset).

Disadvantage: Learning those new fret lengths. They're long. But the distance between strings means that some of the previous one finger-two-strings deal doesn't seem to work so hot.

Also, the saddle has notches (ooo concept) so the strings don't jump during play.

I'm still amazed at the sound. It's a nice brightness for now, but I imagine it'll tone down with aging of the strings.

Does anyone have a supplier on line who stocks octave mandolin strings? The store where I purchased in Pasadena (Vintage Musical Instruments) doesn't seem to be interested in a lot of mandolin business (they're big on string basses... lots of those).

I played my Epiphone mandolin this weekend, 9 shows with a singing group. And the problem is that I'm not loud enough. The mandolin in question is a regular A frame F hole mandolin with steel strings. I use a medium thickness pick.

Thus, I was considering the Trinity College Octave Mandolin (Celtic type - A frame with A - hole) as a replacement because I want the instrumental sound to carry more than the first 3 rows (it's an outdoor venue). Also, I believe a harder pick makes for louder sound? And also, can you get bigger sound by using a different bridge and saddle? The ones I currently have are the stock bridge and saddle, both of wood. I believe that the larger size of the octave mando will help make it louder, as well.

Also, the Epiphone had reoccurring problems in every show because I was digging hard with the pick and the G course was moving over on the saddle so they were right next to the D course. When I moved the strings back, it of course wrecked any semblance of good tuning [during the show]. Yeah, I know it's a cheaper mandolin ($150)... but has this occurred to any of you with a more expensive piece?

Is this normal? Can it be fixed with a replacement saddle/bridge?

Hey y'all. I bought a $149 Epiphone A Style (F holes) two weeks ago. Okay, so it's low end. . .
I was playing the thing, and all at once one of the E strings decided to go flat.
This wasn't flat as in a half step flat, it was about a full octave, the thing simply released pressure. Notably, the tuning peg is your standard worm gear, and one would think it'd be two pieces, but apparently not. I tried tuning the string back up to the correct E, but the peg the string was wound around wasn't turning with the greared section.

I was unable to duplicate said error for the gents at Guitar Center, where there's a warranty.

Anyone else ever experience this problem? Is it repairable? Or should I simply bring a pair of pliers in the event while I'm performing the string goes fubar and I need to cut my losses? It would be horribly inconvenient if said string went half an octive flat in the middle of a performance.

I'd take it to a Luthier but I have a feeling they'd want to hold on to it for a few days, and I gotta perform with the thing in one week. Ideas? Peg drops?

I'm a sometime mandolin dabbler (for 10 years or so) but primarily an electric bass player. I like the sound of mandolin both acoustically and through electronics. I have a Fishman pickup on my acoustic mando, and I am currently retrofitting a mini-solidbody guitar into being a solidbody mandola. That's been an ongoing project for a while now, as I have no training at all as a luthier, so everything is kind of an experiment. I'm working on a solo CD project in my home studio, and if everything goes as currently planned, there will be mandolin on around half of the songs.

I barely even listen to popular music (unless it's on NPR), I don't know who most bands are, and I know almost zip about music, BUT, somehow I ended up being really interested by the mandolin and bluegrass music! :-D So today I joined your ranks.

The 9-volt battery compartment is reached from the rear. The knobs are volume and tone. Love this mandolin!

He only appears/performs in tux tails and top hat, with his face covered in bandages, with sunglasses. Despite all that (or because of it?), he is an outstanding mandolinist (5-string and 8-string) and violinist. He was one of the founders of the prog group FM in the mid-70s, then split from them (replaced by Ben Mink, another great Canadian mando and violin player who later went on to be KD Lang's original svengali) and went on to a solo career. Evidently, he's quite notorious up in Toronto (he opened for the Who there as a solo act!). Note the pictures of his funky custom electric solid-body mandos.

I thought it would be great if we could get more pictures of everybody playing their mandos in the photos section. I promise I won't use your picture as the main picture without permission. So howzabout it, everybody?

I see plenty of the "Model A" style mandos for under $100 and was wondering if they were any good, or should I just save up until I can afford something like good "Model F".

Any other Irish Music people on here?

I posted a pic of the custom mandolin I got last year. Maybe people can post some other pics, if they have unique instruments. I'm also wanting to get a cittern.
Just want to start by saying what a good idea it is to have a Mandolin tribe!
I actually just started playing the Mandolin recently.
I've been playing guitar for 7 years, and I am catching on to the Mandolin quite quickly. I have Mel Bay's Mandolin Chords book, and I've been learning the chords.
I have an Epiphone, and it's a really good starter Mandolin.
I love the gorgeous sound it makes :)

If anyone on here is into traditional music from Ireland and or the UK, just wanted to let you know about http://www.thesession.org. An incredible site! Great tune resource, discussions, info on recordings, etc. I think they have about 4700 tunes now, downloadable as .gif images, abc format or as midi files.

...on a side note, if you download music in abc format (or write a song out yourself) you can convert it into a really nice looking piece of sheet music as a pdf file at the following web site: http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html ... their ABC Convert-o-matic page.

Hope someone finds this info using... ;-)
